Propaganda in Politics

Bandwagon: A bandwagon is a technique used to persuade one person in to doing what you want through conformation towards society.
This commercial depicts a whole community together chanting “[they] like Ike, everybody likes Ike”. It is using Bandwagon in an attempt to make others agree and “Like Ike.”

Scapegoating: Assigning blame to another party in order to distract others from your flaw.
This commercial uses China increasing manufacturing by 25% and the lost jobs of thousands of Americans as a scapegoat against Obama . It pushes the blame towards Obama and his poor decisions to show that he is not a valid candidate for the future.

Lesser of two evils: Using two examples of problems or even solutions and showing the lesser of the evil as the better opinion rather than trying to fulfill the problem.
This commercial shows many graphic images and talks about how bad the previous presidencies were. They Talk about how they’re going to make the Country better than it was and that things won’t be so bad. They focus on working towards peace as a main topic  which isn’t quite so bad as war.

Down with the kids: To associate with children in an attempt to appear as a “common man” and relatable.

This video starts with describing Ford by saying “he was an eagle scout, he was an honors student, he was the most valuable player of Michigan.” It shows how he relates to the rest of Americans and was once a kid too. It then goes into what capabilities he has.

Assertion:  Stating something but in a way conveying dominance in order to get your point across.
Dukakis in this video is campaigning against Bush. He talks about the ads of Bush saying “I’m sick of  all the negative ads, never seen anything like it in 25 years” in an assertive voice. He also uses a phrase to attack Bush saying “Do we have a president who fights for the privileged few, or do we have a president who fights for you?”

Transfer: Transferring the meaning of a symbol or phrase in order to portray the original as positive or negative.
This is an ad with Bill Clinton supporting Barrack Obama’s views. He talks about his views as well as Obama’s and how he supports the decisions of Obama. He uses his previous accomplishments to vouch for Obama.

Omission: A failure to do something, especially something that one has a moral or legal obligation to do.

This Video is for the Romney campaign and it talks about how Romney was able to live up to the promises he made while Obama wasn’t able to do the same. It says Obama admitted to not being able to change Washington and couldn’t live up to his promises.

Propuhganduh

1) The dialogue in my film will consist of multiple people being interviewed and saying how inspired they were by my speech and how excited they were to be in my presence. Other shots will include me speaking in a speech but not exactly any real dialogue.

2) My film will be narrated in the style of an old silent movie in that there will be slides to fill the dialogue in some points along with establishing setting.

3) My project will consist photos, photoshopped photos, videos shot for the project, internet photos for background of green screen videos, slides for the old film feel.

4) My project will only have one song for the musical score, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sxTbfeYdO0

5) I created my story board for an outline. I have created a propaganda poster, a $10,000 bill of myself, and recorded sample footage in attempt key out the background (slightly successful(delivering valuable information to Doug Kelin)).

6) I have taken a few pictures including a $10,000 bill template, filmed sample footage, remade a propaganda poster I made last year. I plan on getting more footage and other photos off the internet.

7) The plot of my film is a parody of an old communistic propaganda video. It starts with images of me such as currency and a poster. It then fades into a video of me giving a speech. In between there are interviews of the crowd and their opinions on the speech. After seeing footage of my speech it shows an astounding support from the world. A newspaper that spins in shows I was elected world leader. Clearly not obsolete. The premise of my video is that I matter because the world adores me as their leader and I clearly contribute to the world as a dictator-esque ruler.

Politca

Of course there is a place for political correctness in contemporary filmmaking, however there is a line where political correctness becomes over sensitive-ness and may sometimes add humor but if there is no political correctness it can offend some audiences.

Sister Wives

What surprised you the most about the end of the movie?
When the princess bride “marries” the prince and then finds out she didn’t marry him.

What were the parts of The Princess Bride you found suspenseful.
Suspenseful?
I found the part when they were trying to call off the wedding to be suspenseful
Realistic?
The only realistic scene I can think of would be when the grandpa read to his grandchild.
Humorous?
The scene where Fezzik pulled them up the rope was quite giggle worthy.
Romantic?
When Wesley and the Princess were united in the end of the movie.

Do you have any memories of your parents reading to you when you were young? What types of books did you enjoy most? Have you revisited any of your childhood favorites in recent years?
When my parents read to me as a kid they read many Dr.Seuss books, I can’t say that I don’t dabble in these books anymore as they are just so wonderful.

Who in the movie did you most identify with and why?
The grandpa because his characteristics fit mine and I will eventually be an old person.

Is the portrayal of Buttercup misogynistic? Is there a pattern in the way that women are portrayed in The Princess Bride? What are stereotypes about masculinity in The Princess Bride? What are the qualities of good men?

Yes Butter was portrayed in a misogynistic way. Throughout the movie there is a pattern in the way women are portrayed, such as the wife of the miracle man who was called a witch. The stereotypes of masculinity are dominance and control. The qualities of good men can be seen in Wesley and his actions.

Think about the role of Fezzik in the movie. Andre the Giant played Fezzik. Andre had a syndrome called acromegaly, This condition is a result of excess growth hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland, and it can result in disfigurement, gigantism, and premature death. Do you think it’s acceptable to use characters such as giants and dwarves in movies and television shows? Should they be defined by their physical appearance onscreen?

I think it is acceptable to use giants and dwarves in TV shows and movies, many of these actors/actresses embrace and love their life and they embrace the characters they play so in many cases are recognized solely for their roles but are seen as equal human beings.

What do the characters’ actions say about perseverance? What motivates them? Do you think internal or external motivation is more important in accomplishing goals?

They constantly try no matter the difficulties ahead, vengeance and true love are the main factors in their perseverance. I think the motivations may be more important than accomplishing the goal in the case of Inigo.

During the marriage scene, the priest has a speech impediment. Did you find this scene humorous? If so, were you comfortable laughing?

I found the scene with the priest to be quite funny and I was comfortable laughing at it as there was no one around with a similar problem.

Many characters in the movie are the best in the world at something. What is Westley the best at?

Westley can be perceived as a perfect person in the movie and the best at everything in a sense.

When we first meet Inigo and Fezzik, they are working with Vizzini to kidnap Buttercup. Later, they become allies of Westley in his efforts to rescue her. What causes Inigo and Fezzik to change . . . or do they really change at all over the course of the novel?

Fezzik doesn’t change much although he assists Westley he is only following him because he has nothing else to do, Inigo finds someone to help him take vengeance on his enemy and exploits/helps Westley.

When Westley confronts Humperdink, he says that he won’t fight to the death but to the pain. Is it crueler to kill someone or leave them alive in their pain?

It is much crueler to leave someone in their pain as they have to continue to suffer.

Discuss the story Westley tells about the Dread Pirate Roberts. How does this tale within the tale influence your interest in Westley? Is he still the same farm boy from the beginning of the book?

Westley is the same boy from the beginning of the book as he still searches for his true love Buttercup and perseveres.

How should The Princess Bride ultimately be categorized: Satire? Adventure? Romance? Fantasy? Is the title ironic? Does it imply a tame love story or a traditional piece of children’s literature?

The Princess bride seems to be a satirical film and the title is not ironic, it does imply a love story/children’s book.

My Dad's New Website

The video contains more than just 3 emotions and can be interpreted in many different ways. This video conveys nostalgia, love, and serenity through many different aspects. The camera movement and desaturation add an old feel to the film creating a nostalgic feel. The shot itself is serene and the fade to white shows happiness.

Yearbook Reflection

Our story was about: A kid who had a nightmare about forgetting to buy a yearbook with only one possible way of obtaining it. He then wakes up and realizes he needs to pre order a yearbook.

The idea for the story: Came from Jacob and I as we tossed different ideas back and forth on what to do and finally settled on a humorous plot.

Percentage of the story concept I was responsible for: About 50%

The Protagonist in the story: Is the kid who forgot to order a yearbook.

The Antagonist in the story: Is Mr.Klein who wouldn't let the kid buy a late yearbook.

The Type of Conflict in the story is: External Conflict

The Climax of the story is when: Mr.Klein turns into a yearbook, making the kid wake up and realize he needs to buy a yearbook.

The Story resolves itself when: The kid wakes up and pre-orders a yearbook from Mr.Klein

The resolution of the story is: Comic because the kid realized that he made a mistake and that it could be solved after a revelation through dream.

Some elements of exposition include: Rising Action, climax, falling action, resolution

To adjust to no spoken dialogue: We used speech bubbles with on screen text.

The content in the dialogue had to do with the story and humor.

The entire video was made in iMovie and had to be constructed frame by frame.

The Song in our video was: Only time

The Band: Enya

The song was not featured in any other known movies.

It was suggested by myself.

It was chosen because it conveyed a sense of sorrow and despair as the kid couldn't think of what to do after realizing he hadn't pre-ordered a yearbook.

We included many sound effects in our video.

They were used to show shock, pleasure, dissapointment, all around emotions.

My involvement in the sound effects would be about 60%.

2 things I would have done different would add more sound, and sync it up better.

My partner was: Jacob Borntreger

Both my partner and I shared the responsibilities of creating many frames for the animation by hand and putting it together in iMovie with sound effects.

I felt in sync with my partner throughout the entire project.

Both our experience with iMovie is little to none, though we picked up quite quick.

All of the partnership worked well, we communicated and worked together flawlessly to create a great video.

A GRAND DAY OUT

Exposition:
There are a few main characters of the short film including Wallace, Gromit (a dog), and a strange robot on the moon.  Wallace is protagonist in the film. Most of film takes place on the moon, where Wallace finds “cheese” but some of the film takes place in Wallace’s garage.  The beginning is in a generally happy mood and continues throughout the film.

Rising Action:
Wallace wishes to have cheese and crackers but soon finds out that there is not cheese.  Thus, he sets out to build a rocket ship on the notion that the moon is made of cheese.

Resolution:

The resolution of this can be seen as a comic resolution. Wallace and Gromit set out on a mission to retrieve cheese for their crackers and achieve it. The Robot on the moon even profits, as he gets makeshift skis from their rocket.

Close Reading of a Film: Toy Story

Title: The opening scene of the movie shows Andy, playing with his toys and shows how his toys are important to him. It’s a cinematic sequence and builds the characters. It plays “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” to convey friendship.

Story/Plot/Narrative: The toys of a young boy come to life while humans aren’t around. A cowboy by the name of Woody who belongs to his boy, Andy, feels threatened when he buys a new toy, Buzz Lightyear. Buzz feels as if he is a real spaceman and doesn’t come to the realization that he is a toy like the others. Andy’s family moves to a new home and the toys must escape the house of his crazy neighbor who has gotten ahold of them.

Motifs: Woody is seen throughout the movie with the feeling of jealousy, always wanting to be Andy’s favorite toy. All of the toys convey the emotions of needing to please their owner and keep him happy. Together in the movie they work together to complete tasks and build a friendship, trumping their stubbornness.

Characterization: Woody: Andy’s oldest and favorite toy, the protagonist, always loved Andy. Andy plays with him all the time but buys a new Buzz Lightyear and Woody becomes jealous and feels the need to be the favorite again.

Buzz: Buzz Lightyear is another main character who can be seen as an antagonist and protagonist. He sparks jealousy in Woody and almost replaces him. However he and Woody become best friends towards the end of the movie.

Sid: Sid is the next-door neighbor and is the Antagonist. He gets a hold of the toys and does horrible things to them. The toys have to escape him and get back to Andy.

Scene/Sets: The movie takes place in the real world. It can be considered the Disney Pixar Universe, and is completely animated. The sets/scenes relate to the real world and give the sense that toys actually come to life while no one is around.

Plot: The main conflict in the movie is how Andy’s toys are captured by the deranged neighbors and Andy finds that they are lost. Together, after fighting through personal relationship conflicts, the toys work together to escape Sid, the evil neighbor, to get back to their owner, Andy.

Theme: The theme behind Toy Story could be showing how teamwork can bring all together, and that even if someone finds a new friend, it doesn’t mean they can’t have old friends. When Buzz and Woody learn to get along together, they make it through the conflicts of the movie.

Rising Action: The rising action of Toy Story is the part where the toys escape Sid’s house and leave to find their owner Andy.

Resolution: The Resolution of the movie is at the end, where after Andy thinks his toys are lost, he finds them in his toy box when they ended up going on an adventure of their own.
